Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

❓ Why is speech audio not playing properly?

On iOS, PhraseEcho prioritizes the offline Supertonic voice engine for most supported foreign languages; voice models download when first needed. If offline assets are missing or unavailable, playback falls back to Apple system speech. Chinese utilizes Apple system voices directly. On Android, the app relies on the device's configured system text-to-speech engine.

❓ How do I migrate my data to a new device?

PhraseEcho requires no mandatory online account. You can navigate to Settings > Export Backup (JSON) on your existing device, transfer the exported file to your new device, and tap "Restore Backup". On iOS, you can also utilize your personal iCloud Drive to automatically back up and restore your study library.

❓ How does the EchoFlow spaced repetition scoring work?

PhraseEcho implements the EchoFlow adaptive spaced repetition algorithm using three evaluation tiers: Good (understood clearly), Fuzzy (partially understood), and Forgot (did not understand). It dynamically recalculates consecutive streak depth, difficulty factors, and cooldown intervals to present phrases at the optimal memory boundary.

❓ What are the format requirements for CSV files?

The app supports standard UTF-8 CSV files matching PhraseEcho’s expected column schema (text, translation, phonetic, etc.), as well as complete JSON database backups. Raw CSV exports from generic third-party flashcard apps may require column adjustments prior to import.

❓ Where is text sent when using optional OpenRouter AI translation?

AI-assisted translation is completely optional. When you choose to request AI translation, only the phrase text and target language parameters are transmitted directly to OpenRouter and its chosen model provider to fetch the translated text. Never submit passwords, private conversations, or confidential information. An OpenRouter API Key is never required for core offline learning.

❓ Does speech recognition require internet connectivity?

When on-device speech transcription is supported by your device and required system assets are available, audio is processed completely offline. If on-device recognition is unavailable, iOS may utilize Apple’s server-based speech recognition service. Downloading language assets for the first time may also require an internet connection.
